Deserve. It’s a word that we use a lot today. But the problem is this: we do not understand what it is that we truly deserve. According to the Bible, we are all born children of wrath, dead in sin and apart from God, and the only thing that we truly deserve is death and eternal separation from God, namely Hell.

But God, in His great mercy, made a way for us to be reconciled to Himself and obtain eternal life through Jesus Christ. As our substitute, Jesus lived the life that we should have lived, died the death that we deserve and rose from the grave, conquering death and making a way to eternal life for those that would repent and trust in Him alone. Jesus took what we deserve and gave us what we do not deserve. That’s grace.

You see, only when we understand what we truly deserve will we truly understand grace. Christ is the free gift of grace that we all need. Nothing earned. Nothing deserved. All a gift given. And once we have Him, we have everything. All is grace.
