Paul had a real, deep sense of his sinfulness, both past and present, and this is what enabled him to claim that he was the worst sinner of all.

We want to encourage you to join us in making this a central Scripture of our Advent celebrations this year. Because perhaps a greater awareness of our own sinfulness is something that we could all grow in this season.

Perhaps we would begin to look more like the humble tax collector rather than the prideful Pharisee praying in the temple in Luke 18 (v 9-14).

Perhaps we would be more aware of our need for God’s grace and quicker to extend that grace to others. To confess our sins both to God and to one another and ask for forgiveness.

Perhaps we would be less easily offended on account of our understanding that we are actually more vile than anyone thinks us to be.

Perhaps if we heeded Paul’s instruction not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think (Romans 12:3), we would agree with Martyn Lloyd-Jones in that, “When a man truly sees himself, he knows nobody can say anything about him that is too bad.”

Perhaps if you and I viewed ourselves, like Paul, as the worst sinner of all, the coming of Christ to save us from ourselves would be the heart of our celebrations this Christmas as we longingly await His return.
