The Word of God makes it abundantly clear that we are all eternal beings on our way to an eternal destination. And this life that we live now is just that—a journey on one of two paths that leads to an eternity elsewhere.
Jesus defines these two different paths as follows: the broad way that leads to destruction, or eternal punishment in Hell, and the narrow way that leads to life, or eternal joy in Heaven.
And contrary to the teachings of this era of easy believism that we are living in, Jesus teaches that there are actually only few on the narrow way, whereas many are traveling the broad way. He warns that only few find this narrow way. Why?
Because while the broad way teaches you to “follow your heart,” the narrow way teaches that you must deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Jesus (Luke 9:23). While the broad way says, “you be you,” the narrow way requires you to be holy as God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16) because it is no longer you who live, but Christ who lives in you (Gal 2:20). While the broad way encourages you to love yourself and to do whatever makes you happy so you can have your best life now, the narrow way commands that you love God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matt 22:37) and out of that love obey His commandments (John 14:15), living no longer for the lusts of the flesh but for the will of God (1 Peter 4:2) so that you may have eternal joy.
Salvation is not cheap and easy.
The broad way allows company and comfortability but the narrow way involves persecution and a willingness to stand alone.
Although the narrow way is a tiresome, uphill road that is contrary to the natural tendencies of our flesh, those who are traveling it are content to do so because they confess that they are strangers and pilgrims on earth, understanding that with each day they are nearer Home. That their Treasure is in Heaven, namely Christ, and it is He Whom they are traveling towards. Pilgrims on the narrow way have counted the cost and decided that He is worth it. Have you?
There are only few on the narrow way. Perhaps the most important question that we can ask today is this: am I one of them?
