While Zacharias was performing his priestly service in the temple, an angel of the Lord appeared to him to reveal that his barren wife, Elizabeth, would bear a son. This son was to be named John and he would prepare the way for the coming of the Lord.
Since Elizabeth was barren and both her and Zacharias were advanced in years, he questioned how he could trust the truth of this promise. Due to his disbelief, the Lord caused him to be mute until the day all of these things were fulfilled.
After several months, once Elizabeth had given birth and her and Zacharias agreed to name the child John, the Bible says that, “at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God” (Luke 1:64).
Not to omit the richness of this story and all else that happened during this time, but what an amazing thought to consider speaking in praise. God Himself gives us the ability to speak, and He can take that away from us at any moment should He choose to.
What if praise were more readily on our lips? What if, when we opened our mouths to speak, instead of being eager to complain or slander or cause destruction, we spewed forth praise? What if our most natural response to God’s revealing of His glory was a delight-filled celebration that blessed His Name? What if God’s people were a people who couldn’t help but speak in praise of Him?
